the dim light of the setting sun casts eerie shadows through the canopy of petalburg woods as absinthe ventures deeper into the forest. her crobat, sanguinarine, flits around her head, its dark purple form nearly indistinguishable from the gathering darkness. the gentle chirps it emits are the only sounds emanating through the emeraldine trees, save for the crunch of dead leaves beneath absinthe's boots.[break][break]

she had visited this land once, before the war. it was peaceful, quiet, a bit creepy. now, it is hallowed ground, parts of it etched by still-burning scars carved into it from the conflict nearby. even the pokemon that once made their homes here are quiet, as if mourning the peace team rocket and its allies had destroyed.[break][break]

but absinthe is not here to grieve what has come to pass. she does not have time. she needs more pokemon for her work, and she needs them quickly.[break][break]

she sighs and pulls the brim of her gas mask closer to her face, creating an even tighter seal. what a sordid state of affairs.[break][break]

sanguinarine chirps softly, drawing absinthe's attention. it's hovering over a particularly dense thicket, its wings beating furiously. absinthe follows its gaze and notices a faint glimmer of movement through the foliage. a pokemon? or a lurking enemy?[break][break]

steeling her gaze, absinthe approaches the rustling underbrush.

Beyond the occasional crackle of leftover embers, silence washed the area, cradling the world in a soft embrace. Branches scratched his arms as he pressed past them, moving deeper into the center. He had overheard a coworker mention seeing multiple wounded Pokémon still hiding between the wooden carcasses that made up the woods.

it was the way he spoke about them that urged Cyrus to move. It was so dismissive, nonchalant. As if their distress was just another inevitable casualty in Team Rocket's pursuit of victory.

He couldn't accept it. He couldn't discard them that way.

So Cyrus took the free time he was given and packed up some supplies to make a trip to the woods. For a second, as he shuffled around his apartment, he contemplated sending a text to desmond sloane to see if he wanted to join him. But then he decided against bothering him with the suggestion.

"See anything?"

Glancing around, Cyrus' eyes sought the shadows Aurora, his alolan ninetails, avoided. Together, they swept the grounds, searching for tracks, hunting for a hint of sound.

Only, they didn't find anything. Not even a Patrat.

It wasn't until they pushed back a final thicket of shriveled shrubbery that they came face to face with, not a pokemon, but an emerald woman.

as cyrus emerges from the bushes, sanguinarine immediately alights alongside absinthe with an irate shriek, puffing his chest out and folding his wings in on his body. absinthe couldn't blame her crobat for being on edge; it is a surprise, certainly, to see any living thing in this blighted land at all.[break][break]

nonetheless, absinthe sizes the young man up appraisingly, taking in his tree-scratched appearance and the lack of weapons on his person. if he had been sent by the league, he'd be woefully underprepared. as such, absinthe makes the split second decision that he is no threat to her or rocket as a whole.[break][break]

"lost?" she asks flatly, her voice slightly distorted by the mask. she shifts her weight, the dead leaves beneath her boots giving a satisfying crunch, and sanguinarine lifts away from her side once more in search of the shadows.[break][break]

absinthe's eyes drift to the surrounding forest. "or looking for something?" she follows the retreating form of her crobat with her eyes. "i'm afraid there's not much left alive in these woods. not after the battles."[break][break]

her sharp green eyes flick behind him, scanning the underbrush intently. there, in the distance, was a flicker of dark fur, and sanguinarine's following warning shriek. absinthe zeroes in on the movement, her muscles tensing in anticipation.[break][break]

the corners of her eyes crinkle as her hand hovers over an empty pokeball on her hip. "not unless you care for the lost and weary."

Strangers always irritated him. It wasn't so much as their fault, just what their inclusion to an area entailed. No longer could he devote his attention onto those possibly struggling to reach another breath. Now, in an awkward hellscape of conversation, his thoughts had been scrambled. Diverted far from the objective that led to their meeting in the first place.

His beating heart recoiled back behind a distant mask of cool expression, with dark eyes staring back at the apathetic woman as though to say what he struggle to say himself.

"What else is there to care for," he replied, his voice clipped. With his lab coat flowing behind every step, and his ninetails trailing beside him, the veterinarian drew himself closer to the other, eyes already caught onto something lurking just behind some bushes.

It was a Sawsbuck, munching on some sparse pieces of burnt grass.

now sanguinarine hurtles back to his master's side, squeaking with alarmed discontent. absinthe shushes him with a wave of her hand.[break][break]

"i believe that those with enough bravery can search within themselves to find a renewed vigor in life. there is value in the suffering of the presently destitute."[break][break]

sanguinarine had come eye-to-eye with death long before she'd pulled him from among the remnants of a massacred colony of golbats, and it showed in the furrows of the charred flesh burnt into his wing. the crobat would've never asked her for pity. however damaged he remained from the antagonism of people previously embraced by rocket, sanguinarine stayed devoted to his dignity. absinthe bids the bat to open its wings, and she points to the scar still marked into the skin there.[break][break]

"sanguinarine was on the brink of death," absinthe murmurs. "and yet he still fought me when i came upon him. his close call burned the weakness from his body. he is stronger now than he ever has been."[break][break]

absinthe looks at cyrus. "and loyal as well, for i did not pity him. his dignity remains."
